Roman expansion beyond the Rhine came to an abrupt halt in the Teutoberg Forest in 9 AD when the German tribes were able to ambush and destroy three Roman Legions and their baggage trains.

In 43 AD, Rome invaded Britain and subjugated the different tribes. The Icene, the major East Anglian tribe, was allowed to conduct it's own affairs until the death of their King, Prasatagus. Upon his death, the Romans confiscated land and property and imposed direct rule. This lead to the Icene revolt lead by Queen Boudicca in AD 60, which the Romans were eventually able to put down.

In Israel, the First Jewish-Roman war started in 66 AD. It ended in AD73, although Jewish Zealots held out in the fortress of Masada until the Roman forces completed a 600m long, 200m high siege ramp. Upon the breaching of the fortress walls, the Romans were shocked to find that 953 of the occupants had committed suicide, with only 2 women and five children being captured alive.
