Throughout history, military forces have looked to gain an advantage over their enemies either through careful use of terrain or by constructing fortifications. Fortifications have varied over time from early mud wall fortifications and wooden palisades, through stone fortifications of the Ancient and Medieval periods to the modern reinforced concrete fortifications used around the world.
