The locations of many of histories Battlefields is well known, certainly of those from the last thousand years. Battlefields from the Dark Ages and the Ancient period are harder to locate as name changes and a lack of accurate historical information makes them harder to identify. Archeology has confirmed some, but by no means all, locations of historical battles.

Of those known, many are preserved as National Parks, or have local government protection, even if the land is used for agriculture. Others have been covered under modern buildings or disrupted by road construction schemes.

Naval Battle sites are often difficult to confirm, and the wrecked ships, if still intact on the sea bed, is all that remains to mark the site. These are only visited by a few divers, although many television programmes provide us with a glimpse of the ships that did not survive the battle.

Battles in the Air leave no evidence other than historic film footage and the few historic planes still capable of flying, such as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Battlefield tours typically fall into two categories, organised and independent. Organised tours can be either commercial or arranged by veterans groups although these are not exclusive. Independent tours are basically any visit to a Battlefield that is not done as an organised group.

We have organised the Battlefields of the World by continent to help you find them more easily.
