THE MEN THAT SANK THE TIRPITZ

UK GALLERY EVENT - 8th MARCH

Following our superb series of events commemorating the men of 617 Squadron, we are delighted to announce a rare opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of other brave Aircrews that played a significant role in sinking the mighty German Battleship – Tirpitz.

We are joined for this very special event by Aircrew that flew with 35 and No.9 Squadrons during WWII and on the raids against the Tirpitz:

Warrant Officer KEN JOHNSON – as a Mid-Upper Gunner he flew on Lancasters with 9 and 61 Sqn taking part in many raids, including the final attack to sink the Tirpitz in November 1944 along with attacks on Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s alpine home.

Flying Officer PHIL TETLOW – joining the RAF in August 1942 he soon began wireless training and, after a spell with 17 OTU, joined 9 Sqn at Bardney. He completed a total of 42 ‘ops’ including all three raids against the Tirpitz.

Warrant Officer JOHN MORRISON – with 35 Sqn he flew as a WOP/Air Gunner on Halifaxes, but was shot down whilst attacking the Tirpitz in April 1942. As a result of this he spent the rest of the War as a PoW in several camps including Stalag Luft III.

Warrant Officer HARRY IRONS DFC – joining the RAF at the age of 16 in 1940, he did 2 full tours as a Rear Gunner with 9 Sqn and took part in nearly all the famous raids of Bomber Command. He finished in 1945 at 158 Sqn flying Halifaxes.

Squadron Leader MICK MAGUIRE – having signed up in 1936, he served as both a Gunner and Bomb Aimer with 88 and 9 Sqn. He flew on many aircraft including Blenheims, Bostons and Lancasters and also spent time with the Air Ministry.

Flight Sergeant GERALD PRETTEJOHNS – joining the RAF in 1943, he flew as a Flight Engineer serving with 106 Sqn before moving to 9 Sqn. He completed a full tour on Stirlings and Lancasters including raids against the Tirpitz.

Entry to our event is FREE but STRICTLY by ticket only. Our guests are delighted  to autograph and personalise items for customers and purchases of £40 or more can be signed free of charge - all other items will be subject to a signing fee.
