“Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive – A Day of Remembrance and Reflection”

The highly decorated WWII aircraft carrier USS Hornet Museum will be supporting the History San Jose "Day of Remembrance and Reflection" about World War II on Sunday, August 12 from 10am - 4p.m. at the History Park, 1650 Senter Road, San Jose.

In addition to its all-female Singing Blue Stars group providing some of the vocals for the big band sounds of Swing Solution, the museum will have a very popular F8 Crusader jet fighter cockpit at its information booth for children to climb in.

“Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive – A Day of Remembrance and Reflection” is for families and people of all ages.  Admission is free.

On August 14, 1945, President Harry Truman announced the Japanese Surrender of World War II. At the Remembrance Day, the public will have an opportunity to share and record their stories of World War II and learn about what it was like at the end of the war.

Whether you were serving in uniform, working on the home front or living in another country on August 14, 1945, your memories are an importance part of the community’s history and need to be preserved for future generations.

Along with the exhibit from the USS Hornet, there will be period activities, additional exhibits and demonstrations for kids and families. Learn how to make digital stories for our “Greatest Generation.” Enjoy the music and dance to the hits of the ‘40s sounds of the Swing Solution and the Singing Blue Stars singers.   Take a walk down “Every Street, USA” and re-live life on the home front.

A goal of Remembrance Day is to make the second Sunday in August a National Day of Remembrance and Reflection to honor the sacrifices and achievements of our WWI generation by setting aside a time each year to remind ourselves and the world of what they did for the cause of freedom, especially how the “won the peace” through programs like the Marshall Plan and the rebuilding of Japan.

Event sponsors include Digital Clubhouse Network, History San Jose, USS Hornet Museum, Rosie the Riveter National Historic Site, AMVETS-American Veterans, Roosevelt Institute, Santa Clara County and The History Channel.
