The South Atlantic Special Interest Group exhibited at the Falklands Memorial Display at the Heritage Model Show held at Aeroventure in Doncaster on Sunday 1st April. Aeroventure, on the site of the former RAF Doncaster, is the home of the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum and of the Yorkshire Helicopter Preservation Group. The Museum contains a photographic display and several artifacts from the Falklands Conflict and helicopters from one of the South Atlantic patrol ships... our display was suitably placed in front of a Whirlwind helicopter from the patrol ship, HMS Protector!
The show was a very successful outing for us as we were awarded the George Read Trophy by the show organisers. This trophy is normally awarded to the best model in the show but the judges were so impressed with the whole SIG display that they tweaked the rules a bit and awarded it to us.
For us, this was a fitting conclusion to a small but excellent show. During the day I was able to meet and chat with three SIG members who have models in-build for future Falklands display outings. Members of the public visiting the show and the museum also showed interest in our models...TV and newspaper coverage of the 25th anniversary is clearly stirring some memories.
Our next show will be the Plymouth Premier Model Show on Saturday 28th April, held in the Plymouth Guild Hall, UK.
